Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga, following a massive attack by the Russian Federation, urged partners to bolster the security of Ukrainian grain exports and civilian shipping in the Black Sea.
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote about this on social network X, Ukrinform reports.
Sybiga noted that during the night, Russia launched a massive strike on Ukraine, targeting ports, grain storage facilities, energy, industrial, and other infrastructure with ballistic and hypersonic missiles and combat drones.
“This is state terrorism. It does not demonstrate strength – it demonstrates helplessness. Putin cannot and will not achieve anything on the battlefield. Instead, he is betting on terrorizing our cities, ports, and critical infrastructure,” Sybiga stated.
He emphasized that attacks on grain infrastructure, ports, and maritime routes inflict significant damage not only on Ukraine but also on approximately 400 million people worldwide. In this context, the minister highlighted that 1 hectare of Ukrainian agricultural land provides food for 18 people globally.
“We call for immediate actions to overcome the consequences of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s grain exports: creating additional routes, quotas, providing grain storage equipment, and joint efforts to ensure freedom of navigation on our sea routes,” the minister wrote.
He also appealed for additional support packages to strengthen Ukraine’s energy resilience ahead of winter.
“We appreciate every contribution: air defense, generation capacity, equipment, resources, and energy imports,” emphasized the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Furthermore, during telephone negotiations with his Maltese counterpart, Chris Fearne, Andriy Sybiga urged Malta to support the protection of civilian shipping in the Black Sea.
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed that the parties focused on the deteriorating security situation in the Black Sea. In particular, they discussed the necessity of guaranteeing freedom of navigation, protecting Ukrainian ports, and the maritime corridor, which remains vital for Ukrainian agricultural exports and global food security.
“I urged Malta to support the protection of civilian shipping and enhance international efforts in combating Russia’s illicit trade of stolen Ukrainian grain,” noted Sybiga.
He added that during phone talks with the Maltese Minister of Foreign Affairs, discussions also covered practical support for Ukraine’s energy resilience before winter, strengthening sanctions against Russia, including efforts to counter its shadow fleet and networks supporting its war machine.
“In this context, the Global Maritime Sanctions Monitoring Center, based in Valletta, plays a crucial role in enhancing maritime monitoring, facilitating information exchange, and countering sanctions evasion,” stressed the minister.
Sybiga also assured that Ukraine highly values Malta’s solidarity and is ready to continue deepening bilateral cooperation.
As Ukrinform reported, in Odesa and the region, infrastructure, two educational institutions, and a multi-story building were damaged as a result of the Russian attack.
